Celebrating tourism

In addition to the September 27 celebration of World Tourism Day, Jamaica will host a series of activities to mark Tourism Awareness Week from September 26 to October 2.

The country will join the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the global community in celebrating the Day, under the theme ‘Tourism for Inclusive Growth’.

“[According to the UNWTO] it is an opportunity to look beyond tourism statistics and acknowledge that behind every number, there is a person… and to celebrate tourism’s unique ability to ensure that nobody is left behind as the world begins to open up again and look to the future,” explained Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett.

This theme will be continued throughout Tourism Awareness Week.

“The activities that we are planning will include daily advertorials highlighting initiatives of the ministry of tourism and its public bodies that foster inclusive growth, a church service, a virtual expo, a virtual concert, and a youth digital photo competition,” the minister added.

He also stressed the important role that the tourism industry plays on a national level.

“In Jamaica, tourism is our bread and butter. It is the engine of our economy. It creates jobs, attracts foreign investments, drives the development of critical infrastructure, and promotes trade across multiple sectors. More importantly, it promotes inclusive economic growth and social mobility,” said Bartlett.
